In the
first stanza Weir employs unnatural imagery when describing the putting on of a
poppy.
Pinned/
blockade – word choice suggesting of being entrapped.
Poppies
explores the after effects of war, just as Kamikaze does – but on the individual
solider, and their families (society at large). Weir, in her poem, is showing
the distortion of the individual by war, and the hurt that this then can cause
to their families. “blackthorns of your hair” Imagery – Just as a thorn…
The idea
that the world is forever changed negatively is shown when we are told that “the
world overflowed like a treasure chest”. This simile suggests just as a
treasurechest is full of treasure, valuable things that enrichen their owner so
the world was full of incredible opportunities, things that would enrichen and
beauty before the soldier went to war – perhaps even war was seen as this.
